Grew up in Wheeling, West Virginia, moved to the Detroit area as a teenager, and attended the University of Michigan, receiving a Ph.D. in Plant Science, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard University.
A series of academic and administrative jobs have kept me busy, most recently a faculty position at the University of the West Indies in Barbados, which I left in 1999 to come to Florida for attention to chronic eye problems.
Since then I’ve been a Professor and Department Chair for Horticulture at Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens, where I've written a textbook manual to landscape plants for south Florida. My wife Donna teaches at PBSC also. My oldest son Martin is an engineer in Virginia. My middle son Curtis lives and works in Washington DC, and my youngest son Evan is in college in North Carolina.
